Sketchora

An unofficial desktop app for the Excalidraw whiteboard

What it does

Sketchora wraps Excalidraw, the open source hand drawn style whiteboard, in Electron so you get a native desktop app with real file handling instead of a browser tab.

Sketchora is an independent, unofficial packaging of Excalidraw and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Excalidraw team. All whiteboard functionality and the hand drawn rendering come from their work.

Features

  • The full Excalidraw experience: shapes, freehand drawing, text, arrows, libraries and dark mode
  • Native file handling with New, Open, Save and Save As, stored as real .excalidraw files on your disk
  • Double click a .excalidraw file to open it directly in Sketchora
  • Windows, macOS and Linux from one codebase
  • Recent files remembered by your OS

Install

Download the latest build from the GitHub Releases page, or use the download button above.

Installation notes

Windows. SmartScreen may show "Windows protected your PC" because the build is not code signed yet. Click More info, then Run anyway.

macOS. Gatekeeper blocks the app on first launch. Right click the app, choose Open, then confirm. You only need to do this once.

Linux (AppImage).

chmod +x Sketchora-x.x.x-linux-x86_64.AppImage
./Sketchora-x.x.x-linux-x86_64.AppImage

Linux (deb).

sudo dpkg -i Sketchora-x.x.x-linux-amd64.deb
sudo apt-get install -f

Run it from source

You need Node.js 18+ and Yarn.

git clone https://github.com/MalahimHaseeb/sketchora.git
cd sketchora
yarn install
yarn build:packages
yarn start

In a second terminal, run the Electron shell:

yarn electron:dev
